STM Calamba's IMPACTs on Grandslam Streak!
"The Law of Win/Win says, Let's not do it your way or my way; let's do it the best way."
Three Improvement Action Teams (IMPACT) from STMicroelectronics Calamba bagged a Gold Award each in their respective categories in the recently concluded Productivity Improvement Circles National Convention (PICNC) on September 22-25 in Tagaytay.
Damaged Metal Team or DAMMET won Gold in the Team Category with their project entitled “Elimination of Damaged Metallization Defect at Auto-Backside Coating Machine for Zelda Device”. Antonio Sumagpang Jr, is the team lead and members include Jessie Baccay (Sr. Test Engineer), Leonel Jay Manuel (Equipment Engineer), Sundy Licuanan (Test Engineer), Lani Therese Cueva (Failure Analysis Engineer), Marjorie Villegas (CEEC Technician), Francis Ann Llana (Assembly Process Engineer) and Erika Jheza Escandor (Jr. Test Engineer). Team adviser is Eric Bueno (CEEC Manager). The team addressed the root causes of the problem by utilizing available resources resulting to the eradication of the defect by Q3 of 2009 with cost avoidance of 81K USD.
Missing Impossiball: D’ Ball Errors won Gold in the Non-Production Category with their project entitled “Reduction of Missing Ball First Pass PPM at Ball Attach Process”. The circle led by Orjen De Guzman, Assembly Process Engineer, addressed five (5) controllable root causes and managed to reduce ball missing defect from 8,000 PPM to 800 PPM starting October 2009 to present. This 90% improvement translated to 92.92K USD Savings. Team members include: Heidi Ang (Operator), Marife Atienza (Production IE), Emelita Lumibao (Big Sister), Marilyn Calubaquib (Sr. Supervisor), Mary Maye Melgo (Process Engineer), Dionel Gayo (Sustaining Engineer) and Enrico Carencia (Sr. Assembly Process Engineer).
Dammet and Missing Impossiball used DMAIC fused with QC Story Steps in tackling their improvement projects. Fault tree diagrams were also utilized in the analysis. Statistical tools were used in verifying solution effectiveness.
Scan Zero got gold in the Production Category with their project entitled “Reduction of Cover Tape Defects at Taper Area of PIR028 Tape and Reel Machine”. The team led by Leah Salazar, Production Operator, exceeded their target by reducing cover tape defects by 85% vs. 75% goal. Scan Zero is an Autonomous Maintenance Pilot team at Finish Production. Team members include: Deonny Gundran (Operator), Jay Sanchez (Technician), Joseph Tanguilan (Technician), Ma. Cecilia Catublas (Big Sister), Rosalina Peralta (Operator) and Heide Parabuac (Operator). Team adviser is Roed Llagas. The project yielded 57.5K USD Savings from July 2009 to June 2010 and is expected to add up more savings up to 44.42K USD until December this year.
Scan Zero fused QC Story with Autonomous Maintenance principles in ensuring project success. In-depth Cause Analysis was done by the team using Fish Bone Diagram.
All three teams used Error-proofing in generating alternative solutions and subjected the best solutions to Potential Problem Analysis. Other problem solving tools such as Pareto, Graphs and Matrices were also utilized.
Team coaches and facilitators include Ms. Arlene Salido (TQM Manager), Ms. Flordeliza Aldaya (TQM/TPM Chief Engineer) and Elgina Lim (Quality Improvement Engineer).
PICNC is a national gathering of improvement teams and quality practitioners from different companies, organizations and industries from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. 17 Project Teams from 12 different companies vied for the Gold Award.
ST Calamba's IMPACTs sustained their grandslam streak (after their QCRC win in August) simply by doing it the best way: employing a systematic approach and using the correct tools properly.
